Don't let AI overwhelm you. You're not alone—I've had countless conversations with professionals at all levels who are feeling the same way. That’s exactly why I started AI Simplified nearly two years ago to break things down, focus on what truly matters, and cut through the noise of shiny objects and endless breaking AI news.
If you ever have questions, feel free to message me. I love answering them.
DeepSeek: proceed with caution. Make sure your employees understand the potential concerns with this AI tool. This is why it is so important to vet your AI tools before using them or downloading them.
DeepSeek, a Chinese developed AI platform, has recently gained significant attention for its advanced capabilities and rapid adoption. However, business leaders should exercise caution when considering its integration due to several concerns:
Data Privacy and Security: DeepSeek's terms of service indicate that user data, including personal information and chat interactions, is stored on servers located in China. This raises concerns about potential access by the Chinese government, as Chinese laws may require companies to share data with state authorities upon request. Notably, DeepSeek's privacy policy states that personal information is held "on secure servers located in the People's Republic of China."
Censorship and Information Control: Reports indicate that DeepSeek exhibits censorship behaviors, particularly on topics sensitive to the Chinese government. For instance, the AI avoids discussions on subjects like the Tiananmen Square incident and the status of Taiwan, often providing responses aligned with official state narratives. This inherent bias could affect the objectivity and reliability of information generated by the platform.
Security Vulnerabilities: Recent findings have revealed that DeepSeek left a critical database exposed, compromising over a million records, including user data and internal information. This incident underscores potential security risks associated with the platform and highlights concerns about its data protection practices.
Regulatory and Compliance Risks: The storage of data in China and the platform's data handling practices may conflict with international data protection regulations, such as the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) in the European Union. Engaging with DeepSeek could inadvertently lead to non-compliance with such regulations, exposing businesses to legal and financial repercussions.
These are things that can be managed just bringing awareness about the platform to you.
On the flip side of this, Microsoft Azure and Perplexity have integrated DeepSeek into their platforms for potentially safer versions: https://www.pcmag.com/news/deepseek-is-here-to-stay-as-microsoft-perplexity-integrate-its-model
Yes, you can run it locally on your own machine as another layer of protection through LM Studio https://lmstudio.ai/blog/deepseek-r1. Yes, it is free, which should drive down pricing for other AI models. The other AI models can learn from DeepSeek in efficiency, better, cheaper and faster platforms. They can learn how to bring down costs and hopefully pass along to you.
The competition is heating up. Even Sam Altman welcomes the competition. I am betting the o3 model will get released way sooner than they planned due to the DeepSeek love that is happening right now.
Something is definitely coming soon!
The US Copyright Office just released a 52-page report on their stance on AI in regard to copyright. It is a part 2 to follow up the report they did back in July 2024.
Review it here: https://www.copyright.gov/ai/
Here are the main takeaways: (These have always been true so not sure what is new here other than it being in black and white text.)
- AI-generated content alone cannot be copyrighted - there must be meaningful human creative input.
- Simply writing prompts is usually not enough to claim copyright.
- Using AI as a tool as part of a larger process does not prevent copyright protection.
- No new laws are needed right now to handle AI copyright issues.
