I was honored to be the keynote for the SCORE Confluence Conference. My talk was on Your Time to Shine: Embracing Change. It was a full circle moment as I worked with several SCORE mentors in the early days of my business 19 years ago. Given where we are in the world, I thought you might like to hear some of the things we discussed.
Why we don’t like change?
Fear of failure
Lack of control
Fear of the unknown
Lack of trust
Misunderstanding
Perceived increase in workload
Bad experience so we anticipate the worst
Each experience is an opportunity to grow.
We discussed the variety of changes that may have happened in our lives. We wrote down the change and then wrote down the outcome/growth that came from that change. I call these valley and mountain moments. We all have them. This is a great exercise for reflection. I can remember getting laid off from Corporate America in my second job out of college and I was devasted. It was beyond my control and zero reflection of my abilities but I took it personally. From that change, that nudge I landed a better job, more responsibility, and a place where my ideas were valued. I wouldn’t have left that other job as I loved it. It was a blessing as the new job led to bigger opportunities and continued growth.
My 6 steps to embracing Change.
C.H.A.N.G.E.
Cast off the past. Don’t look back we aren’t going that way.
Have an openness to new things. Growth mindset versus fixed mindset.
Anticipate success. Write a letter to yourself one year from now. Write the letter as if you hit your goals and it already happened. Write the emotions you are feeling as you achieve what you set out to accomplish. Who are you surrounded by? What are you doing for fun? Who are you impacting?
Navigate your fears. FEAR=False Evidence Appearing Real. Our brain is just freaking out and we need to let it know that we are simply learning.
Grow through change. If we didn’t change, we would still: go to the library to use a computer, go to the bank to get money, be riding a horse, drive to see or get a movie, and be using MySpace 😂
Embrace ongoing change. You will lead teams of humans and AIs. 85% of jobs that will exist in 2030 haven’t been invented (Institute for the Future). More change is coming. Change is constant.
