Some people I have talked with about AI are frustrated with the output from trying ChatGPT. When I ask them what prompts they are using, it is simple things like “write a blog post on a specific topic”. That it is, no other details. AI needs context and needs to understand what you are trying to accomplish. You don’t need a huge mega prompt to make it work well.
Treat it like your assistant or an advisor. What would the assistant or advisor need to know in order to help you?
Give it specifics like:
Who are you writing to?
What is the goal or outcome you want to achieve?
What length do you need the content to be? 1000-word blog post or 280-character tweet.
What platform are you creating the content for?
What tone do you need for the content?
What format do you need for the content? text, table, outline, etc.
Give some examples of your writing or what you are trying to create in a similar fashion.
Give it a role. If you want it to be a marketing expert, say you are a (marketing expert or insert role), complete the following task.
I have found that the best way to prompt ChatGPT is after I give it a task with context, I tell it to ask me questions for clarity.
Ask ChatGPT to prompt you.
Here are prompting best practices provided directly from OpenAI here: https://platform.openai.com/docs/guides/gpt-best-practices/strategy-write-clear-instructions
They have also created a Prompt library on Discord to assist in better prompting. Discord OpenAI Prompt Library You will need a Discord account.
Who better to give advice on the platform than the people who helped to create it? 🙌
